Julie Howe College Scholarship Program

It is a goal of the Santa Cruz Quakes AAU Girl’s Basketball Organization to help mold Quakes players into athletic, strong and intelligent young women.  With this goal in mind, the Santa Cruz Quakes Board of Directors has established the Santa Cruz Quakes Julie Howe College Scholarship Fund.

Julie Howe founded the Santa Cruz Quakes in 1997 and was the director of the organization for 12 years.  Julie’s many years of service and dedication to the Quakes helped build the program into the premier girl’s basketball AAU club in the Monterey Bay Area.  Julie retired from the Quakes in 2009.

The Julie Howe Scholarship will be awarded to a current Santa Cruz Quakes player or players in their junior or senior year of high school.  Awards from $500.00 to $1,500.00 will be given.  In the event the scholarship is awarded to a player in her junior year, the Quakes will hold payment of the scholarship money until May 15th of the player’s senior year.  The scholarship will be awarded to a player or players who best meet the following criteria:

1. Is a current Quakes player in her junior or senior year
2. Has played in the Quakes organization for 2 years or more
3. Possesses at least a 3.5 grade point average
4. Has been accepted to a 4 year college/university OR plans to attend a junior college or a 4 year college/university immediately following their senior year
5. Has displayed outstanding sportsmanship
6. Has displayed a strong commitment to her education
7. Has completed the required scholarship application process

All interested Quakes players in their junior or senior year of high school must submit the following materials prior to May 15th, 2012 to be considered for this scholarship:

1. School transcripts showing cumulative grade point average
2. One letter of reference from a teacher or a coach
3. An essay of 750 to 1,000 words in length detailing how their participation in playing for the Quakes has helped them prepare for college (essays must be computer generated, single spaced in size 12 font)

All materials must be submitted together to be considered for the scholarship award.

The Quakes Board of Directors will review all scholarship applications and notify the scholarship recipients in writing no later than May 25th, 2012.
